When there is a threat to campus safety or operations, the University issues a NinerAlert. NinerAlerts are sent using a variety of methods, which are determined based on the nature of the threat. NinerAlerts are sent via University email, text message, digital screen take-over, the LiveSafe App, social media, and/or alert sirens. This mixture of communication avenues allows the University to reach the widest number of people during an emergency.
During an emergency, the only way for the University to ensure notification to every member of the UNC Charlotte community is via University email. Anyone with a University email account will receive this notification. It does not require registration. (Family members, please complete this form to sign up for email alerts.)
All faculty, staff, and students who have provided a cell phone number to the University for text messaging purposes will receive a NinerAlert for situations that pose an imminent threat to safety or for a change in operating conditions. To verify or add your cell phone information, log into my.uncc.edu. (Please note that family members must complete this form to sign up for email alerts and/or send a text message to 67283 with the keyword UNCCharlotteAlerts to receive text alerts.). Members of the campus community are encouraged to check the main UNC Charlotte website for emergency alerts and important updates during and immediately after an incident has occurred on campus. A banner will automatically appear on the University homepage. Click on the banner for more information.
The University has equipped more than 8,400 on-campus computer and TV screens with an emergency alert software called Alertus. In the event of an emergency, this software allows the NinerAlert system to override current content with urgent information.
The main campus has three emergency sirens that can be used to disseminate important information in the event of an emergency. These sirens are located at the Atkins Library, behind the Police and Public Safety/ Facilities Management building, and in the wooded area in between the EPIC building and Grigg Hall. When activated, the sirens will emit a loud siren tone followed by an audible voice message. While the tone and message may be heard inside some buildings on campus, the sirens are primarily designed to alert individuals that should take action. If you here the sirens activated, please immediately seek shelter and check the University website and/or University email for important information.
The weather hotline is used during inclimate weather events that impact the University's operating condition. The number to dial is 704-687-1900.
The LiveSafe app functions as a mobile bluelight phone with direct access to Police and Public Safety. The app can also function as an emergency alert tool by pushing information directly to users' phones. Click here for more information on the app, including download instructions.
