Christopher Gonyar joined the Safety and Security team in May 2014 as the director of emergency management (formerly business continuity and emergency management planning). Prior to joining UNC Charlotte, he served as an emergency management consultant with Leidos (formerly Science Applications International Corporation). In this role, Gonyar worked with jurisdictions and organizations across the county on a variety of emergency management planning and exercise initiatives. During his time at Leidos, he focused on continuity of operations, planning for functional needs populations, emergency management in higher education, and Homeland Security Exercise Evaluation Program (HSEEP) compliant exercises and trainings.
Gonyar graduated from UNC Charlotte in 2005 with double majors in history and political science and again in 2007 with a master’s in public administration. During his time as a student, he was actively involved in the North Carolina Student Legislature (NCSL), serving as the attorney general for the state, the Student Government Association (SGA), serving as the chief student council for two consecutive years, and was selected as the honorary bell ringer for the 2007 spring commencement.
Kevin W. Martin
Emergency Preparedness Coordinator

Kevin Martin came to the Office of Emergency Management in June 2016 with nearly 15 years of experience in emergency services and emergency management. His most recent position was assistant director of public safety at Reinhardt University where he coordinated emergency management efforts, as well as serving as an adjunct faculty member.
Martin has served on local and state emergency response teams, has deployed to major disaster areas, and has taught for multiple organizations and institutions. He is a graduate of UNC Charlotte with a B.A. in religious studies.
Shawn J. Kiley
Business Continuity Analyst

Shawn Kiley joined the Office of Emergency Management in February 2012 as the business continuity analyst. Kiley’s main responsibilities focus on managing the Business Continuity Planning program for the University. This includes managing departmental continuity of operations plans (COOPs), business impact analyses (BIA), the COOP test, training, and exercise (TTE) program, and the campus-wide business continuity plan. He received his bachelor’s in political science with a concentration in international relations from Florida Atlantic University and his master’s in public administration with a concentration in emergency management from UNC Charlotte. Kiley is certified as a Certified Business Continuity Professional by Disaster Recovery Institute International.

Police and Public Safety Emergency Management Coordinator
Lt. Brian Thomas is the professional standards and accreditation manager, and emergency management coordinator for Police and Public Safety (PPS).
In this role, he is responsible for the emergency plans and alert systems for PPS. Thomas has been with the University since 2006. He began his tenure as a police officer, advancing to field training officer in 2007. He was promoted to sergeant over research and development, professional standards and emergency management in 2009 and assumed his current duties in 2012.
Thomas holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of North Florida, a master’s in public administration from UNC Charlotte, and a doctorate in adult and community college education from North Carolina State University.
He is certified as an associate emergency manager by the North Carolina Emergency Management Association.
